Course Description:
The primary goals of the Common Core English Language Arts Education courses are to introduce educators to the English Language Arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and to assist educators in becoming more effective classroom teachers by using materials, pedagogical techniques and appropriate tools to teach the ELA CCSS.
These courses will focus on the implementation of higher-order/critical thinking skills for students in elementary, middle school and high school ELA classrooms. The courses will also enhance content knowledge in ways that conform to the NCTE/IRA standards. Educators will examine strategies and skills to creatively engage ELA students and master teaching techniques appropriate for the implementation of the ELA CCSS.

| Accreditation & Transcripts | Upon completion, students may request a transcript from Converse College, a leader in graduate education and an accredited institution. Credits may be applied towards professional development, licensure renewal, career and salary advancement. Please Note: These courses are not designed to satisfy requirements for those seeking to teach at the community college level or above, or for dual enrollment. Students must check with their state/district for approval. |
| Readings & Resources | Students will be using selected readings, videos, and other items available via the Internet, as well as Pathways to the Common Core: Accelerating Achievement by Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, and Christopher Lehman, and published by Heinemann in 2012. |
| Course Requirements: | Participating teachers may take up to nine months to complete all requirements. There are no scheduled class sessions or meetings. All work is to be submitted through the Moodle e-learning platform. Please refer to the courses syllabi for further information on the course requirements. |
| Course Topics: | Course topics include but not limited to: History and Overview of Common Core English State Standards, Introduction to Common Core English State Standards, Revision of current lesson plans to be Common Core State Standard appropriate, and Creating and designing module lessons to implement the Common Core English State Standards |
